Hibs fight back to earn a draw against Huddersfield

Goals by Leigh Griffiths and Ivan Sproule saw Hibs come back from two nil down to gain a respectable draw against a strong Huddersfield Town in a hard fought encounter at Easter Road.

The Terriers, will start the season in the Championship for the first time in 11 years, and many in the crowd were keen to see Scottish international Jordan Rhodes who scored an incredible 40 goals last year.  Rhodes is the son of former Dunfermline goalkeeper Andy, who was between the posts when Hibs beat the Pars 2-0 in the final of the Skol League Cup in 1991.

There was a familiar face on the visitor’s bench as former Hibs keeper Nick Colgan took his seat to a warm reception from Hibs fans in the lower west stand.

Pat Fenlon started with the team that many expect will be his first choice when the season starts for real next Sunday at Tannadice.

A disappointing crowd of just over 4,000 turned out to see Fenlon’s new look Hibs team which contained only five players  from the side who started the cup final on 19 May. Welshman David Stephens partnered captain James McPake in the centre of the defence, leaving Paul Hanlon at left back and new signing Tim Clancy on the right. The new  4-2-3-1 formation saw Lewis Stevenson and Jorge Claros as holding midfield players behind Eoin Doyle, Ivan Sproule and David Wotherspoon leaving Leigh Griffiths on his own up front.

Youngsters Ross Caldwell, Sam Stanton and Danny Handling who all scored during the pre-season tour had to be content with a place on the bench alongside two trialists Alan Maybury and Mark Kerr.

Huddersfield started brightly and Rhodes had an effort well blocked by McPake before Ben Williams was called into action twice in the space of a minute to deny Lee Novak.

The visitors took a deserved lead after 15 minutes when a through ball found both Rhodes and Lee Novak in space. The Scotland international calmly slipped the ball to Novak who passed it into the net.

Five minutes later, Huddersfield doubled their lead when Sean Scannell latched onto an inch perfect through ball from Novak before side footing the ball past the helpless Williams.

At this stage, Huddersfield looked as if they could score at will, but Hibs hit back on the half hour mark against the run of play when Griffiths’ hit a spectacular volley past  keeper Alex Smithies from a Wotherspoon cross.

This lifted the Hibs fans, and the Easter Road men ended the first half on top.

Mark Kerr, playing as a trialist, replaced Claros at half time, and on 60 minutes, Alan Maybury, also playing as a trialist replaced Eoin Doyle whilst new signing Paul Cairney replaced Paul Hanlon.

Within two minutes, Hibs got a well-deserved equaliser. Griffiths hit a first time 40 yard pass to Ivan Sproule on the right wing. The flying winger beat the full back twice before curling a 20 yard shot into the top corner to the delight of the Hibs support.

A few minutes later Sproule left the field with the cheers of the Hibs fans ringing in his ears as he was replaced by Handling.

With ten minutes left, Griffiths was replaced by Ross Caldwell and received a standing ovation from the fans. Earlier, Griffiths had confided that he was aware that some Hibs fans were against his return due to his attitude, but he certainly proved any doubters wrong with his performance today.

Hibs continued to dominate and always looked the likelier team to score, but the game fizzled out without further goals.

After the final whistle, a satisfied Pat Fenlon said: “It was a sloppy start from us today. We looked a bit leggy today from the start because of the travelling and the training yesterday, but once we got going it wasn’t too bad. We made a few changes in the second half but pre-season’s like that. We try to pick the positives out of it and work on the negatives and make sure we put them right before next week.”

Fenlon also praised Alan Maybury and Mark Kerr’s contribution and said that the club will have to make a decision as to whether to offer them contracts this week. He said: “I thought the two trialists did OK, they gave us a little bit of experience. There use of the ball was better; they kept it for us and kept the shape of the team. We know what both of them are like, we’ve had them on trial for a while but we don’t know what we are going to go at the minute. We have to make a decision for their sake rather than ours to be honest. They need to know where they stand. We’ll sit down with the powers that be over the next few days and see what we can do.”

Williams, Clancy, McPake, Stephens, Hanlon, Claros, Stevenson, Sproule, Wotherspoon, Doyle, Griffiths. Subs: Antell, Caldwell, O’Hanlon, Booth, Pa Kujabi, Cairney, Handling, Stanton, Smith and two trialists.

Huddersfield: Smithies, Hunt, Clarke, Lynch, Dixon, Gobern, Clayton, Atkinson, Scannell, Rhodes, Novak. Subs Bennett, Colgan, Woods, Norwood, Ward, .Clarke, Wallace, Lee, Kay, Higginbotham, Robinson, Ridehalgh, Spencer.

Fenlon still hopeful of signing Alan Maybury

Hibs boss Pat Fenlon is still hopeful that a deal can be struck to enable ex Republic of Ireland international defender Alan Maybury to sign for the club.Speaking ahead of the friendly match against Huddersfield, the former Bohs manager confirmed that talks are on-going and with the lack of numbers in his squad, he needs players who can contribute in a number of positions.

He said “He’s training with us at the moment and he will be involved tomorrow. We’ll sit down over the weekend with the club and with Alan and we’ll see where it takes us. I am interested in Alan but it’s whether we can do anything, is where we are at the moment.

“What he give us is that he is a very very good professional and he can play anywhere across the back and I’ve said previously when we’ve released so many players that we need two or three players in the squad that can play in a few positions and Tim Clancy fits that role as well.”

Fenlon also confirmed that he is still trying to bring in new faces ahead of the forthcoming season, but the finances mean that the task is not an easy one. He continued “We are working away on that at the moment; I still feel that we are a bit short in one or two areas. It’s not as easy as people think, people keep saying why haven’t we done this and we signed him but we  have tried to sign players but unfortunately there are still clubs in Scotland that are outbidding us for certain players but we are looking for players and will continue to do that. We may have to remove one or two to do that but it’s a difficult time for everyone at the moment.”

His plight may have been made easier with the performances of teenagers Ross Caldwell, Sam Stanton and Danny Handling who all did well during the pre-season tour of Holland, Belgium and Germany, and have staked their claim for a first team jersey.

He said: “We’ve released sixteen players from the club and we are not in a position to bring that many in so we are going to need to be able to dip into that pool of young players that we have from time to time and there are some good ones there that on the trip did quite well and they give you food for thought.”

Earlier this week, Chairman Rod Petrie issued a statement asking fans to help the manager’s budget by buying season tickets, and targeted an additional 3000 who have not renewed over the past two years. Fenlon knows the difference a packed Easter Road can make to the team.

He continued: “The season ticket numbers have improved slightly but it’s a big ask; that’s a lot of supporters, but whatever we get in will be a massive help. I can also understand where some of supporters who haven’t renewed are coming from because of what they have had to watch over the past couple of seasons. What we’ve seen here on the night that we played Dunfermline is that if we can get a big support behind us it makes a big difference to the team.

After the East Fife game, Ivan Sproule claimed that this was the hardest pre-season he had encountered in senior football, and Fenlon was quick to point out that fitness is a major factor in his training sessions. He said: “I felt last year that we weren’t fit enough, I said that at the start. I think that the one thing every footballer should be is as fit as they can be. We’ve got the facilities to make sure that they are they and the least we can do as a staff is to make sure that our fitness levels are where they should be. The players have worked really hard and we’ve added some  quality too and now we need to add a little bit more, but for any footballer it’s a given that one they are fit and two they work hard and I think the group we have at the moment fits the bill.”

Huddersfield will bring Scotland international forward Jordan Rhodes to Easter Road tomorrow for the 2pm kick off. Rhodes was a prolific goal-scorer for the Terriers last season when they won promotion to the Championship for the first time in 11 years. The Yorkshire club drew with Kilmarnock on Wednesday, with Rhodes scoring their goal.

Youngsters shine as Hibs beat Zeeland select 4-0

Hibs youngsters have given Pat Fenlon a welcome selection headache for the coming season with fine performances  against a Zeeland select this afternoon. Goals by Sam Stanton, Danny Handling (2) and Ross Caldwell secured an emphatic victory in the seering heat of the Sportscomplex in Vlissingen.

Fenlon made ten changes from the team which narrowly lost to OH Leuven last night, with only  trialist Alan Maybury retaining his place although he changed position from centre midfield to his more familiar right back. As expected, skipper James McPake returned to the starting line up with Sean O’Hanlon as his defensive partner.

Youngsters Calum Antwell, Danny Handling  and Sam Stanton all made their first starts in the famous green and white jersey alongside new loan signing Lee Griffiths, as Fenlon clearly wanted to give all his squad some game time.

Fenlon continued with the new-look 4-2-3-1 formation with Callum Booth handed a holding midfield role, and  after a slow start Hibs began to take total control of the match against a Zeeland side containing semi-professional players from the region.

This dominance eventually led to an opening goal on 24 minutes. A Jorge Claros  throughball allowed Pa Kujabi to get to the by-line and his cross was stuck in the net by Stanton on the second attempt.

The Easter Road men then doubled their advantage on 37 minutes when Danny Handling met Leigh Griffiths’ cross at the back post to score from close range.

Just before half-time, Paul Cairney had a goal disallowed for offside.

After the break, Hibernian moved up a gear and Handling struck again with a superb finish, rifling a low right-footed shot into the far corner of the net to make it 3-0.

Handling was involved in the fourth when he set up Ross Caldwell to score from close range for his second goal of the pre-season tour.

Hibs final game will be against Union Berlin on Tuesday night, before they return to Edinburgh to prepare for their friendly match against Huddersfield Town on Saturday 28 July.

Hibernian: Calum Antell, Alan Maybury, James McPake, Sean O’Hanlon, Pa Kujabi, Jorge Claros, Callum Booth, Danny Handling, Paul Cairney, Sammy Stanton, Leigh Griffiths.

Subs: David Stephens for Maybury, Caldwell for Griffiths, Doyle for Stanton

Irish Stars Abroad

Welcome to our first edition of Irish stars abroad. In our weekly column we will review anything and everything that happened on a match day involving any player who has links to Ireland.

It was quite an extraordinary weekend across World football, with a record of 41 goals been scored in 8 Saturday Premier League matches alone. Four Irish stars got on the scoresheet as part of that record, with some big shocks taken place and some delightful footwork from a rising star making every Irish fan smile.

Kevin Doyle scored the winning goal as Wolves became the first side to beat Manchester United in the Premier League this season. Nani had given United a third minute lead and it did look like the result was just a formality from there, with the leagues top team looking most likely to put the bottom team to the sword. However a George Elokobi goal some minutes later and Doyle`s header moments before half time ensured that Mick McCarthy`s men were back in the game. United failed to create anything in the second half and the former Ireland manager got a famous win over Sir Alex Ferguson.

Leon Best proved to Newcastle United fans that there is life after Andy Carroll. Best scored the second goal of Newcastle`s miraculous comeback against Arsenal, moments after having a legitimate goal chalked off. The Magpies found themselves four goals down after 26 minutes but never gave up. A cracking Cheick Tiote striker three minutes from time completed the turnaround.

James McCarthy bagged a brace as Wigan Athletic recorded a 4-3 home win over Lancashire rivals Blackburn Rovers.McCarthy showed great technical ability to fire home his second, when it seemed like the crowded defence would snare his opportunity.Keith Andrews was an unused sub for the away side.

Rory Delap played his part as Stoke City bagged to late goals to stun Sunderland.Irish international  Jon Walters came off the bench as two late Robert Huth goals sealed a 3-2 win at the Britannia.Delap`s throws wreaked havoc in the Sunderland defence, allowing John Carew to prod home the opening goal for the Potters. Both Glenn Whelan and Marc Wilson were unused subs for Tony Pulis` men.

Richard Dunne and Damien Duff were on opposite sides as Aston Villa and Fulham played out a 2-2 draw at Villa Park.

Seamus Coleman was impressive again as Everton grinded out a 5-3 home win over Blackpool. Louis Saha stole the show with four goals, with a fifth been rule out after the Donegal native had played him in. Andy Reid did not feature for the Tangerines despite his impressive mid week showing.

Shay Given watched from the bench as a Carlos Tevez hat trick guided Man City to a resounding 3-0 win over West Brom. Ex Ireland star Stephen Reid picked up a late booking for the Baggies, while he also gave away the penalty which the Argentine duly converted.

Two Irish strikers who didn`t get on the scoresheet this weekend were  Robbie Keane and Shane Long. Keane`s West Ham went down 1-0 to Birmingham City, while Long`s Reading side suffered a similar fate against Championship leaders QPR.

In the Championship,Cork Native Damien Delaney opened the scoring for Ipswich Town as they ran out 3-0 winners over relegation threatened Sheffield United. The Blades Irish contingent of Michael Doyle,Stephen Quinn and Mark Yeates could do nothing to aid their cause. Former Ireland stars Mark Kennedy and Colin Healy also featured for the Tractor boys.

Andy Keogh opened the scoring as Bristol City thumped Sean St Ledger`s Preston side 4-0.

Kevin Kilbane hit the fourth goal as Huddersfield Town beat Exeter City 4-1 in League One.

Elsewhere in League One , Clinton Morrison grabbed an equaliser to ensure Gary Megson`s debut as Sheffield Wednesday manager didn`t get off to a losing start. They came back from two goals down to draw against MK Dons.

In Scotland, Jon Daly opened the scoring as last year`s cup winners Dundee United dumped Hamilton Academical out with a 3-1 victory.

Both Adam Rooney and Richie Foran recorded a brace as Inverness walloped a hapless Morton side 5-1.

No Irish stars featured in the Old Firm Derby. Both Anthony Stokes and Graham Carey were unused subs as Celtic earned a cup replay after a fiery 2-2 draw that saw both sides reduced to ten men.

Coleman Rewarded With New Contract

Talented Irish winger Seamus Coleman has signed a new four year contract with Premier League side Everton.

Coleman, who joined Everton from Sligo Rovers in January 2009 has been awarded for his outstanding form this year, which has earned him rave reviews. The E60`000 that the Toffees paid to Sligo for the Donegal native is definitely one of the best Premier League bargains in recent years.

The Killybegs native has found the net five times this year, and will take on a more significattn role at the club now that influential midfielder Stephen Pienaar has been sold to Spurs.

Coleman has been called into the Ireland squad on one occasion but has yet to be capped. Irish manager Giovanni Trappatoni  was dealt with criticism in some quarters for not fielding Coleman in the Euro 2012 qualifiers against Russia and Slovakia.

Coleman, who helped guide Blackpool to the Premier League while on loan there last season, is bound to receive more chances to wear the green shirt in the not too distant future. His form combined with Greg Cunningham`s leg break and Kevin Kilbane`s move to League One side Huddersfield Town should see the caps begin to pile up for the rising star of Irish football.
