League Of Ireland: Derbies To Decide Capital Gains

dubThe League Of Ireland focus switches to the capital this week as two potentially season defining derbies take place. Both derby games will have keen significance at both ends of the table as they pit title contenders against relegation threatened teams.

LOI: Tense Times As Relegation Trapdoor Looms

This week’s Airtricity League series features four league games complimented by a Setanta Cup Final between Shamrock Rovers and Drogheda United. Despite the season still being relatively young we can already get a fair idea of who will challenge at the top and who will be cast adrift at the bottom but such is the unpredictability of the league that results could surprise us at any instance. The pressure at the bottom is certainly heating up and some big games this season will determine whether the race for the drop will be exclusive to the three teams who already look destined for relegation. Candystripes Set To Push Sligo All The Way

Declan Devine’s Derry City have enjoyed a blistering start to the 2013 League of Ireland new season. The Northern Irish club sit at the top of the tree after the first round of fixtures were completed on Friday night, chasing them, Sligo Rovers who collected their first league title last November. This time around we’re looking at whether the challenge of Derry City will fade away throughout the league season (from here to October for those who do not know) or will we be looking at the eventual winners of the Airtricity League Premier Division.

After week eleven, Derry City sit top of the league table level on points with second place Sligo Rovers. The two sides, before writing this article, are in action on this evening at the Showgrounds. The winner, if there is one however, will go three points clear of the opposition which at this stage is already a vital chance to prove their title chances in front of a bumper away crowd expected to travel to Sligo on tonight. LOI: Late Strikes Make For Dramatic Friday Evening

Week 11 came to a close Friday evening, around quarter to ten, and we knew exactly who stood where. Ian Baraclough knew his side had dropped to second place after title chasers Derry City had won and unforgettably his side, had not. Sligo picked up just the point after they could only muster a draw at Shamrock Rovers.

Reading loanee Karl Sheppard got a late equaliser to deny Sligo the chance to snatch a ‘smash-and-grab’ win in Dublin. As for Derry, they managed a late rally to capture a win against Limerick, despite striker Rory Patterson appearing to be  offside when he netted for the winner for the Candystripes. Read more

Things will heat up at Tallaght  Stadium tonight as Shamrock Rovers battle  league champions Sligo Rovers in a significant match at the top of the table. There was shocks from all over the country this past weekend as week ten of the Airtricity League season threw up some unexpected results. With the first third of the season almost over the table is beginning to take shape. St.Patrick’s Athletic managed to end an impressive league run for Sligo Rovers after beating them 2-0 at Richmond Park on Friday evening, while there were also victories for Limerick, Derry & Dundalk respectively.

Supersaints End Sligo Record:

St Patrick’s Athletic ended Sligo Rovers 100% start to the season on Friday night with a resounding 2-0 win in Inchicore.

Liam Buckley’s men were very impressive, with goals from Conan Byrne and a late Killian Brennan penalty enough to see of the challenge of the Champions.

An exciting night of League Of Ireland awaits as the big guns come face to face for the first time. Champions Sligo Rovers travel up to Dublin to face Liam Buckley’s St.Patrick’s Athletic at Richmond Park in the live televised encounter while the ever impressive Derry City host Shamrock Rovers.
