Irish In Exile #8 : Owen Ralph

owenAt a time when many people are forced to leave Ireland, Owen Ralph is one of the lucky ones whose time away is part of an educational and cultural investment in his future.

As part of his studies at UCD, the 20-year-old from Dublin is in the midst of a one-year ERASMUS internship in Germany, and Irish News Review decided to speak to Owen to discover what inspired him to pursue the path he’s on.

“I always have ideas in my head or written down for businesses that one day I’ll set up or help another business with,” he explains, “so Commerce International in UCD was an obvious choice because I also liked German at the time thanks to some great teachers at Lucan Community College.  Read more

Irish In Exile #7 : Wesley Redmond

While many people travel the world to satisfy their sense of adventure, the stark reality is that many young Irish are leaving in search of employment – or at the very least for a fair day’s pay in return for an honest day’s work.

This is essentially the situation Wesley Redmond found himself in last year, and which prompted his decision to spend a year Australia.

After having his weekly hours at Champion Sports cut from 40 to 20 – and even with taking on a second job that left him working a 55-hour week – the 23-year-old from Lucan was left with nowhere near enough income to pay the bills, and began looking for alternatives.  Read more

Irish In Exile #6 : Patrick Moynagh

Drumgoon Arabian LinkIf someone was asked to name the most common destinations for individuals emigrating from Ireland, it’s highly likely that most people would offer places such as Australia, New Zealand, Canada or the U.S. as the most popular ports of call.

That said, there will always be those emigrants that end up in places considered by most to be somewhat off the beaten track – and sometimes significantly so.

So it was for Patrick Moynagh, who in 2010 decided to move to Saudi Arabia and take up a position as an Economic Advisor to the Saudi Arabian Central Bank. Read more

The Irish News Review Lions Squad

Lions

The Lions squad to Tour Australia will be announced by Warren Gatland and his lieutenants tomorrow at 11am – Tuesday April 30th - and 38 players will Tour. The announcement will end the speculation that has been rife since the start of the Six Nations. The European semi-final weekend just gone was the final chance for the players to audition for the trip Down Under. Most of the plane is filled at this stage, but last weekend the coaching team split up for the final time to cast their eyes over proceedings in the RDS, Montpellier and Twickenham and the players in contention had one last opportunity to squeeze their way into the famous red jersey. Akin to the  attention paid to tennis player’s Wags  during Wimbledon, the cameras honed in on the faces of the Lions coaching staff at each break in play in order to spot a giveaway look, or nod of approval, that would signal someone had done enough. But further speculation was all that could be garnered from the steely expressions and early exits. Now the playing is over and it’s an agonising wait for those involved in marginal calls. Gatland and his henchmen will come together again today to finalise selections before facing the media and breaking the squad tomorrow – Tuesdays are rarely this exciting. After it’s announced the difficult work begins as they hope to become the first Touring side to record a Test series victory since Ian McGeechan’s men in South Africa in 1997. The Lions, as a sporting brand, needs to win but they face an Australian side that will be bolstered by their club’s best domestic Super rugby form in years , all their stars are fighting tooth-and-nail for a Test spot against the visiting Lions. What a Summer Down Under awaits! Read more

Irish In Exile #4 Padhraic Duffy

Unlike many young Irish emigrants, Padhraic “Podge” Duffy’s recent emigration to Australia had little to do with a search for personal adventure or job opportunities.

Instead, the birth of his daughter to his Australian partner prompted the 23-year-old Lucan native to consider what was best for his family, and a move to the other side of the world was soon being planned.

Recalling the circumstances leading up to his 2012 move, he says: “It wasn’t like I had a deep desire to live in Australia that drew me to its shores. Read more

Connemara: Where Memories Are Made

Whenever someone asks me where I live and I say Connemara I almost always get the following reaction – “Oh I’ve great memories of Connemara.”.  It seems everyone who has spent time in Connemara has a story to tell.  Whether it’s a childhood summer building sandcastles in Ciarán Beag, Carraroe or a fortnight in a mobile home in Roundstone; maybe a week in a fine hotel in Clifden or even a month brushing up on their Irish in the Gaeltacht, Connemara holds a special place in everyone’s heart.  Read more

Irish In Exile #3 : Alan Byrne

Alan Byrne is a freelance graphic designer from Tallaght who in 2008 decided to experience a completely different way of life.

After many years of working in the retail sector, a redundancy encouraged the now 34-year-old to pursue the long-held ambition of living and working in a foreign country – a decision that not only led to a profound cultural experience in Australia, but which also prompted him to re-dedicate himself to a career in which he could utilise his natural artistic skills. Emigration A One Way Ticket To Any Sort Of Future

The tiger is long dead and the empty shells of houses and absence of children at the dinner table signifies the harrowing future of the once mystical and magical land that is Ireland. The traditional picture of an Irish family gathered around a table for Sunday dinner has now diminished with the youth leaving that table and the comfort of the land they knew to seek out futures in foreign lands, far from the arms of their mothers and fathers. The land of Saints and Scholars has become the land of sorrow. Read more
