WWE Brings Down Dublin With Action Packed Night

The WWE Wrestlemania revenge tour rolled into Dublin on Friday night, with some of Raw’s star performers putting on a great show in front of a packed out 02.

The opening bout saw R-Truth battle 3MB leader Heath Slater. Truth received a good pop from the Dublin crowd and had the firm backing of the fans who cheered him throughout. R-Truth would emerge victorious from this back and forth match when he hit Slater with his signature Lil Jimmy.   Read more

The Ballance Sheet #4 : Smart Fans Allow Wrestlers To Up Their Game

The crowd at the post-WrestleMania episode of Raw this week was, I think many would agree, one of the rowdiest and liveliest that WWE have had in quite some time. While some of the reactions weren’t the ones desired- particularly for the Sheamus/Orton match and Ryback’s heel turn- the noise throughout the night, from some of the bizarre antics and chants, made for an exceptionally entertaining show.

The crowd at the Izod Center in New Jersey was quite different from your regular episode of Raw, in that it was composed of holidaying die-hard fans from all over the world; a so-called “smart mark” audience. Get a “smart” audience on your side, and you’re pretty much made. Lose them, though, and the reaction you get could border on vitriolic, as seen from Sheamus and Orton’s match. Such is the interesting dichotomy of this particular branch of the wrestling audience. Read more

Wrestlemania 29 Review

Before I get into reviewing the show proper, I would just like to acknowledge the great atmosphere I was lucky to be a part of whilst watching Wrestlemania this year. Showtime Cinema Limerick decided to put the event on in one of their big screens, allowing fans who usually have to watch the showcase of the immortals quietly in their living rooms to engage in a fantastic experience with those in attendance making it very clear who they liked and disliked and creating an atmosphere you thrive on as a wrestling fan. It had to be the funniest and most exciting viewing of Wrestlemania I have ever had and if Showtime decide to run again, and I don’t see why they would not as the place was a near sell-out in one of the biggest screens, I would definitely recommend anybody from the Limerick or surrounding counties to partake in what is guaranteed to be a memorable night.

The pre-show was exactly what you would expect, mainly just last-minute hype videos and skits in order to get last-minute fence sitters to purchase Wrestlemania. The featured match of the pre-show saw defending intercontinental champion Wade Barrett taking on The Miz. Many people were frustrated in the buildup to Mania when they discovered this match would not make the pay-per-view proper. Never the less the two had a fun albeit short match with the Wade bringing back his infamous wasteland move for the night. However it was Miz who would pick up the win and his second Intercontinental championship by locking in the figure four leg lock in a very unique fashion and making Barrett tap out. Naturally The Miz celebrated ecstatically however the whole pre-show seemed underwhelming and the match seemed to lack any real credibility or prestige. Read more

The Ballance Sheet #3 : Solid Crowd Ignites Top Performers

Hey, folks. I’m Gary Ballance, and this is my guide to the often weird, occasionally wonderful world of independent wrestling.

Last time, I went through a few of the factors that go into a successful show, and the various ways fate can intervene and mess them up. This next element deserves its own article: the crowd.

The crowd is the lifeblood of any successful show. For the promoter, a large crowd means tickets sold and costs covered. Large enough, and it could also mean the difference between breaking even and actually making a profit. Read more

CCW blows the roof off with St. Paddy’s Day Massacre

Image

Celtic Championship Wrestling returned to Cork with a bang on Sunday night. To kick off the show, we were introduced to the new CCW Commissioner, Luke Barry. Barry was quick to declare that he was here to “bring CCW to the next level.” He then revealed the first CCW Champion will be crowned, via an eight-man tournament, at Revolution on May 5th. Lone Wolf then came out and interrupted the new Commissioner, stating his case for being entered in the tournament. This led to the creation of the night’s main event, where Lone Wolf would have to fight Big Bad Hynesie in a street fight, which he had to win to get into the tournament.

House Of Pain : For The Love, Not The Money

The majority of wrestling fans think that wrestlers live in the lap of luxury but unless you’re The Rock, CM Punk or John Cena it couldn’t be any further from the truth.

That’s just on the indy scene in the States and Europe, never mind here in Ireland. See if you’re a wrestler on the Irish scene and you want to make money then you may forget about it because there is no money to be made here. You might get some money to cover your expenses like travel accommodation etc but other than that there isn’t a profit to be made at all. Most guys have day jobs which help with their expenses and some guys drive which helps as well if the promoter covers the petrol cost for the driver.  But because I’m unemployed at the moment it’s even harder for me and most times I just barely cover my costs.

The point I’m trying to make is next time you go to an Irish wrestling event show your appreciation and support Irish Wrestling instead of spending your money on WWE tickets because the amount of talent in this country is unreal, prime example is the recent WWE signings of Joey Cabray and Rachel Walker.

As I said next time you’re at any Irish Wrestling event come over to the lads and ladies and show your appreciation and say thank you because I know personally that it means a lot.

Anyway that’s it for now so until next time take it ham and cheesy :-)
