The Irish News Review Lions Squad

Lions

The Lions squad to Tour Australia will be announced by Warren Gatland and his lieutenants tomorrow at 11am – Tuesday April 30th - and 38 players will Tour. The announcement will end the speculation that has been rife since the start of the Six Nations. The European semi-final weekend just gone was the final chance for the players to audition for the trip Down Under. Most of the plane is filled at this stage, but last weekend the coaching team split up for the final time to cast their eyes over proceedings in the RDS, Montpellier and Twickenham and the players in contention had one last opportunity to squeeze their way into the famous red jersey. Akin to the  attention paid to tennis player’s Wags  during Wimbledon, the cameras honed in on the faces of the Lions coaching staff at each break in play in order to spot a giveaway look, or nod of approval, that would signal someone had done enough. But further speculation was all that could be garnered from the steely expressions and early exits. Now the playing is over and it’s an agonising wait for those involved in marginal calls. Gatland and his henchmen will come together again today to finalise selections before facing the media and breaking the squad tomorrow – Tuesdays are rarely this exciting. After it’s announced the difficult work begins as they hope to become the first Touring side to record a Test series victory since Ian McGeechan’s men in South Africa in 1997. The Lions, as a sporting brand, needs to win but they face an Australian side that will be bolstered by their club’s best domestic Super rugby form in years , all their stars are fighting tooth-and-nail for a Test spot against the visiting Lions. What a Summer Down Under awaits! Read more

Heineken/Amlin Cup Semi Finals Preview

image

©FearlessFred. Munster will need another inspired performance like this one against Quins

Here we go, prepare to have your nerves shot. Three Irish teams started the European challenge this season with reasonable hopes and chances of making it to this stage. In the wonderful and funny fashion of the Heineken Cup we find that only one succeeded, whilst two relatively misfired. The eyes of all rugby fans now fall on Munster as they travel to do the impossible and take on Clermont, the sole consolation being that they are not travelling to the cauldron that is Stade Marcel Michelin. Leinster have the arguably easier task of tackling Biarritz at home but let’s see how Munster’s chances stack up first.

Ulster Take Command Of The Table As Munster Put In Another Scare – Rabo Round Up

©M+MD. Connacht have two games left to finish on a high

Is this the new Munster? Flounder about in the league, put fans nerves through a blender ahead of crunch games? Maybe so, and hell if it’s working why change it? Once again they have churned out a lacklustre performance ahead of a crucial Heineken Cup game whilst their top tier allies Ulster and Leinster showed up massively. But it’s the southerners who are “still in the game” so to speak, so let’s give them the benefit of the doubt.

Elwood’s Final Inter Pro As Connacht And Ulster Collide – Rabo Preview

image

The unfortunate nature of the Rabo and the diversity of the teams means that weekends like this sometimes come around. Leinster take on Zebre in a match that somewhat reeks of inevitability given the thumping the Ospreys dished ton the Italians last week and Munster, now out of contention, are only sending three of last week’s team to take on Dragons in a game that won’t do much more than warm up the replacements for next week. Yet there is one mouth watering fixture of sorts, a serious chance for a scalp and a game that could adversely effect Ulster’s play off standing as they travel to take on Connacht.

Munster Loss Will Hurt More As O’Connell Sure To Be Cited – Rabo Round Up

image

Sometimes rugby weekends promise and just deliver across the board. This weekend’s fixtures did just that as Leinster travelled to and defeated a tired Munster in a cracking fixture, Connacht capitalised on Edinburgh floundering towards the seasons end and Ulster completely U-turned on even my own prediction to put in a stunning performance against Dragons and reaffirm their top spot in the league. There was negatives in every game, of course there was, but it was a great advertisement for Irish rugby. Read more

Leinster Travel To Take On An Invigorated Munster – Rabo Preview

Time and time again it’s mentioned, religiously by yours truly, but there is just something that bit extra special about Leinster taking on Munster, an event that is only heightened by the home fixture for Munster given the impenetrable nature of Thomond Park. It takes a serious slug through the books before you get to the days of Munster regularly handing out losses to Leinster, the Donnybrook army have had a near 100 percent success rate against their rivals since 2009.

Ulster’s Heineken Cup Dream Ends Whilst Mighty Munster Return

image

It really is a funny old competition the Heineken Cup. A few months back, Ulster and Harlequins were shoe ins as the top four teams in the tournament, Ulster unbeaten, Quins as good as. Yet here we are with the Quarter Finals played, both teams knocked out in comprehensive losses. In the meantime Leinster showed the Heineken Cup what it is missing in their stunning win over Wasps, in what certainly ranks as one of the best games of the weekend from a spectators perspective.

The Irish Provinces Take On England – Heineken/Amlin Cup

O'Connell will be instrumental for Munster

Yes how the cards have fallen indeed, it looks like this weekend the majority of the Irish players involved in the Six Nations will face off against their English counterparts as Leinster, Ulster and Munster take on Wasps, Saracens and Harlequins. All three of those provinces haven’t exactly had the handiest time of it post-Six Nations. Ulster took a nasty hit from Edinburgh in Ravenhill whilst Munster were flattered by Connacht and Leinster left it till the death to snatch a victory from Glasgow. The following round saw fortunes flip, Ulster snagging their first win in Dublin in over a decade against Leinster whilst Munster were majorly humbled by Glasgow. Yet it is the two losing teams from this round that stand the best chance for this weekend.

Leinster And Ulster Continue League Table Back And Forth

It was a great weekend for comparisons in the Rabo this week as Ian Madigan and Paddy Jackson went head to head in the RDS having been battling each other in the Ireland squad for the Six Nations. But the player news does have to play second fiddle to the headline of the week of course, the news that Declan Kidney will not be continuing as Ireland coach.

A Victory Worth Savouring

We met up on the first weekend in January to start our preparations for the 2013 RBS Six Nations.  It was great to see all the old faces (no retirements) and plenty of new faces too.  It was clear from the first session that there was going to be great competition for places.  On the weekend sessions we would do two pitch sessions a day and then you would have an array of meetings.  It can be quite intense and tiring both physically and mentally.

On the third weekend of camp the management decided to surprise us with a squad trip, we thought maybe paintballing or go-karting, no it was a trip to do some army training in the Curragh Camp.  Again this was physically and mentally draining but surprisingly enjoyable.  On the final weekend prior to the competition we played Spain in a friendly, we won the game but for us it was more about our systems and seeing if they were effective.  We still had a lot to do prior to the Wales game.  Read more
