Book Review: Pandemonium (Delirium #2)

paFollowing the devastating cliffhanger at the end of Delirium, Lauren Oliver returns with the eagerly anticipated sequel Pandemonium which surges the story forward and shows two polarized worlds on the brink of revolution.

This books switches between “Then” and “Now” conveying Lena’s story after she escaped past the barrier and into The Wilds at the end of Delirium.

The “Then” chapters focus on Lena’s arrival in The Wilds, where she is nurtured back to health by Raven and her group of Invalids – that is, those that are “uncured” or infected by the disease of love – and forced to reach deep within herself and call upon her inner survivalist in order to stay alive. The Wilds are wholly different to the world she once knew and she struggles on a daily basis with the thoughts of never seeing her family, her best friend Hana, or her lover Alex again. But to keep her momentum and hope alive, she settles on the fact that this is what she and Alex wanted: freedom; the option to make her own decisions and decide her own path. However, she soon comes to realize that her ideal of freedom is much more warped than she ever could imagine and life in The Wilds is not as perfect as she once thought it to be. Read more

Undefeated (Oscar Winner for Best Documentary 2012)

undefeated

“Lets see here, starting right guard shot no longer in school. Two players fightin’ right in front of the coach, starting center arrested. For most coaches that would be pretty much a careers worth of crap to deal with. I think that sums up the last two weeks for me.” The opening monologue of head coach Bill Courtney conveys the struggle he, and his team, suffer throughout the entire film as members of the Manassas Tigers high school football team in Memphis, Tennessee. This award winning documentary takes a completely humanistic approach to American Football with a focus on Southern American divides between the haves and the have-nots. Society is critiqued not through deceptive editing or creation of misleading situations but through simply watching this team and coach interact with the outside world on a daily basis. What unfolds is no doubt far beyond what the directors, Daniel Lindsay and T.J.Martin, could ever have hoped to achieve. Read more

Film Review: The Host

Film adaptations of popular books are a regular occurrence in the world of cinema nowadays but oftentimes, aspects of the book fail to make the connection when on the big screen.  Andrew Nicholls’ attempt at transferring Stephenie Meyer’s bestselling book The Host onto the big screen suffers from this particular problem.

The Host is set in a time where Earth has been invaded by aliens – known as souls – that inhabit the bodies of humans, indicated by their glowing eyes. Humans are believed to be destructive creatures hell-bent on destroying the planet through warring and violence, and the souls’ solution to this is to take over the bodies in order to make the world a more peaceful place. Top Five Irish Actors Taking Centre Stage In The US

Ireland is recognised for the art of storytelling; from folklore, to literature, to music, to acting. For years it has produced remarkable stage and screen actors such as Gabriel Byrne, Liam Neeson, Michael Fassbender, Colin Farrell and Cillian Murphy to name a few, and now it would seem that there are a number of up-and-coming young male and female actors following their suit and paving their own way with their own distinctive careers. With St. Patrick’s Day not too far away, it is worth taking a look at a few actors making waves across the Atlantic and hoping that this trend only increases as time goes on.

Having A Cracking Time: The Big Egg Hunt 2013

Egg Hunt jpegOn strolling into Dundrum Shopping Centre on Wednesday morning, I noticed something slightly amiss with the local scenery. Three large beautifully painted Easter eggs had taken up residence on plinths by the Mill Pond. This, I felt called for further (and immediate) investigation, for where there is an Easter egg, then surely chocolate would not be far away… Read more

Flight

FlightAs you are presented in the opening scene with an older, hungover, yet still legendary Denzel Washington (Whip Whitaker),who has just slept with a visibly nude, attractive young lady named Katerina, you begin to realise that the title of this film, and the trailer for that matter, is not exactly representative of the entire plot that is about to unfold. Having said that, this is not a movie that is ever likely to find itself being featured on the in-flight entertainment of any airlines around the world, unless they have disturbingly witty owners who would find showing passengers a realistic air disaster to be an ironic barrel of laughs. WWE Parties Ready To Rumble

WWE Parties Ireland make a welcome return on Sunday November 18th for the annual Survivor Series card.

The event sees wrestling fanatics return to Captain America’s on Dublin’s Grafton Street for a third time under the WWE Parties Ireland banner, following successful showings of Wrestlemania and Summerslam this year.

Doors open at 9pm and their will be a whole host of activities to lead fans up to the main event at 1am. A Survivor Series themed table quiz is scheduled while fans will also get to choose classic Survivor Series matches that they want to watch. The quiz will be hosted by Luke and Duane, singers of “Just Take Care, Spike Your Hair”, the official theme of WWE superstar Zack Ryder’s “Z! True Long Island Story programme”.WWE music will be played on the night while there will also be WWE tshirt giveaways and more.

With the pay per view on the big screen, late food, a late bar and a friendly atmosphere it really is the ultimate experience for any wrestling fan and at €5 it certainly is a bargain. Tickets for the event can be bought here.

Survivor Series itself promises to be a classic and hoardes of fans gathering at the event will be hoping to see Irish superstar Sheamus regain his World Heavyweight Championship as he battles The Big Show, who took the title from his grasp at Hell In A Cell.

Elsewhere on the card Ryback will have another crack at taking the coveted WWE Title from CM Punk in a triple threat match which also features John Cena. The monster, a revelation since his WWE debut, was screwed out of the title by referee turned wannabe superstar Brad Maddox at Hell In A Cell.

In traditional Survivor Series style two teams of five will do battle but who will be the last man standing as Team Foley battle Team Ziggler? WWE legend Mick Foley recruited Randy Orton, Kofi Kingston, Kane, Daniel Bryan and Ryback to his team to face Team Punk, which has since been changed due to the latter’s participation in the WWE title bout. Ryback has also been dropped from Team Foley for the same reason and as of yet no replacement has been announced. Team Foley will battle with Ziggler, Wade Barrett, Alberto Del Rio, Damien Sandow and Cody Rhodes.

Expect more matches to be revealed as the event draws closer.

At Irish News Review, we have two tickets to give away for the highly anticipated event courtesy of our friends at WWE Parties Ireland. To win the tickets simply be the fifth person to tweet us (@irishnewsreview) the correct answer to the following question.

Survivor Series is the second longest running WWE pay per view, true or false?

Paranormal Activity 4

How is there a fourth one I hear you ask? Well as any horror series will tell you (Saw, Hostel, Halloween) as long as there is no definite ending then there’s no way the production company, Room 101 in this case, is going to turn down the possibility to steal more money from naive theatre goers (i.e. me). Whether it’s the right thing to do is another question. Yes there is jumpy moments and the usual suspenseful undertone we’ve come to expect from the Paranormal Activity franchise but there is nothing different here than any of the others. In fact, the scariest part of the movie was the reflection of modern-day capitalisation and the negative effects it is having on our culture. I mean a six-year-old kid watching cartoons on his laptop while having a bath! Society is doomed.

The plot picks up at the culminating events of Paranormal Activity 3 where demon-possessed Katie killed her siblings family, apart from her sister’s son, Hunter, who she can be seen leaving with at the end. A new family have just moved in to the house but we soon find out Katie lives just across the road with her own son Robbie. Hunter is nowhere to be seen until we realise  that he is here all along as he is the adopted son of the new family, renamed Wyatt. The “stars’ of this film are the teenage daughter Alex and her snoopy boyfriend Ben. Alex is the protagonist we follow hoping, or not, that her journey doesn’t come to a bitter end like every character previously in that role. The goal of these spirits is still confusing after four attempts at it. Katie needs to turn human vessels into dark spirits for Robbie to become one himself and needs Wyatt’s (Hunter’s) help to do so, or something along those lines,. The ending does give some hope in that it appeared to close the revolving door that is Paranormal Acterrible (see what I did there). Although having said that, if anyone could keep a series going it would be these writers. A court ordered cease and desist is the only way to be safe from this build up of waste encroaching further into our lives.

The special effects appeared worse than the previous ones as well and the film was generally just tedious and mundane. The novelty of an entire movie being made on hand-held and surveillance cameras  has definitely worn off and with the added spice of webcams for this one it merely appeared like an advert for Apple with the amount of laptops being brandished about. Maybe there WAS subtext and the film IS a cultural criticism of our reliance on technology…..or maybe it just is what it is, a cheap seasonal thrill with little creative effort put in. The fact that this falls into the horror genre and that it is coming up to Halloween is possibly the only reason I could safely give for going to see this film without feeling as morally bankrupt as the producers themselves.

Savages

After reading reviews in The Irish Times and The Guardian, both slating Savages and all it stands for,  I had to question my own positive perception of the film and whether I was missing something completely different to these reputable naysayers.  Maybe it’s because I went to the cinema with lower expectations, or that I could be accused of watching through a stereotypical male gaze for enjoying the scenes of violence and sexual promiscuity,  but I found this movie delivered exactly what it says on the tin (That tin being Don Winslow’s 2010 novel of the same name, to which the script is based on).

The premise is straight forward in the category of drug related action features.  Small time marijuana dealers operating out of Laguna Beach, Ben (Aaron Taylor-Johnson) and Chon (Taylor Kitsch), come into conflict with big time drug dealers, the Mexican Baja Cartel, lead by Elena (Salma Hayak).  Elena wants Ben and Chon to sign a contract to work for her but easy-going environmentalist Ben just wants to get out of the business while hardened ex-mercenary Chon wants to continue selling what is regarded as the ‘best weed ever’ to the licenced medical marijuana shops in California, along with their less legal clients. This ends up in the Mexican Cartel taking what they want from Ben and Chon by kidnapping and ransoming their “friend” O  (Blake Lively). The rest of the film is spent focusing on the pair fighting for her back.

Elena’s right hand man, Lado (Benicio Del Toro), adds the dark, sinister element as seen from the moment he appears on screen. He is always one step ahead of the pair, along with Chon’s mercenary buddies who hang around to lend a hand . The action is one thing that cannot be dismissed in this film; exploding vehicles, kidnappings and day-light assassinations all add to the violent undertone of the business these characters are in.  Let’s not forget the pièce de résistance of this entire production…..John Travolta. Now if your like me your image of the man has probably been tampered with by the troublesome off-screen accusations and my fear was that no matter how good the film was it would be ruined by his presence. How wrong I was. I enjoyed every minute Travolta was on screen and his character seemed to be suited perfectly for his present allegations. He plays Dennis, a corrupt DEA agent who has a finger in every pie (No puns intended).  He feeds information to both the Mexican Cartel and Ben and Chon in return for financial gain and ends up having a final say on who comes out the winners of this competition between strength and will-power.

What isn’t so straight forward is Ben and Chon’s connection to O. All three appear to be in a relationship with both men sharing O in a physical way. She claims to love them both equally but has a stronger emotional bond with Ben. The sad fact for O is that Ben and Chon rely more on each other than her. The script has been accused of being a feeble attempt at post-modernism due to O being named after the protagonist in the novel The story of O (1954 ), about a female sex-slave who submits to a number of men and is merely a sexual object,  and Ophelia in Shakespeare’s Hamlet, a female character who is controlled emotionally and sexually by two different men (her father and Hamlet) and is chastised by men in general. The film raises the question, through O and Elena, of whether women can have their cake and eat it too, can they have a family and a career? The answer according to Mr.Winslow and Mr. Stone is no, so in this respect I see why certain critics demolished the movie in its entirety.

Both the acting and directing has also been rebuked by many critics for this not-so-masterpiece, however, casts don’t come much bigger and more diverse than this. John Travolta  and Salma Hayek contrast with the younger generation of budding actors  in Taylor Kitsch, Blake Lively and Aaron Taylor-Johnson. They are all brought into one creative concoction by Oscar winning director Oliver Stone. I’m not of the same apocalyptic view of that this is the end of all things great in the career of these stars but admittedly this is not award winning stuff.  Furthermore, the ending leaves a sour taste in the mouth as it is a classic Hollywood cop-out but if you want a fun watch with your friends then you can’t really go wrong…..unless you read too much into it that is.

Breaking Bad: The Story So Far

Unfortunately a slight snag has presented itself in our coverage of the Autumn TV lineup in that the European air dates have switched back to a more old school fashion, meaning us lowly folk won’t see any of these TV shows until the New Year most likely. With that in mind what we’ve decided to do is write up some retrospective reviews on what has come so far in some of the top series we recommend, starting this week with AMC show Breaking Bad. *SOME SPOILERS FOR SEASON 1-4 OF BREAKING BAD BELOW*.

Breaking Bad is not like anything you’ve ever seen. This is a hyperbolic statement much overused when someone describes a favourite movie/series/album etc but it is completely relevant and appropriate when it comes to this show. We follow the exploits of a high school science teacher, Walter White, who already has it bad enough working two jobs to pay the bills when he is diagnosed with terminal lung cancer. Lost in the throws of disbelief and shock, Walt seems to be a soft and unspoken man ready to accept his fate and succumb to his illness, until fate brings him to Jesse Pinkman. Jesse is a former student of his and Walt is surprised to find that this average to poor student has seemingly turned himself into a reputable producer of Crystal Meth, or “cook”. With some leverage over him, Walt offers Jesse too choices: be turned in to the D.E.A or allow Walt to join him and together they can clean up producing the much sought after high. If that much already sounds crazy, you’ve no idea what you are in for as the series progresses. Looking back now, I don’t think I could actually watch the first season with half as much interest as I did originally, given how much bigger and bolder the show has become five years later. Walt’s journey brings him to dizzying heights, turning a small scale operation producing a couple of thousand dollars per cook into a conglomerate yielding millions…. And of course back again. Walt and Jesse leave a slew of bodies and relationships in their wake as they work toward the ultimate goal of total domination over the rest, which includes average street thugs right up to the Mexican cartel. Oh and did I mention that Walt’s brother in-law is the D.E.A agent leading the charge to eradicate Walt’s special “Blue Ice” methamphetamine? What makes the show work is how well it knows it is insanely over the top. The writers, and particularly showrunner Vince Gilligan, write it in such a way that they are always looking for the most outlandish resolution to a plot thread, yet still always manage to ground the show in some sense of reality at the same time. Quite simply there never has been and never will be another show like this on television, and the icing on the cake is the perfection of the casting, Malcolm In The Middle veteran Bryan Cranston commanding in the lead as Walt, Anna Gunn and Aaron Paul playing perfectly as Walt’s wife Skylar and his partner Jesse respectively, the two polar opposite sides of his life. Particular mention also must go to Dean Norris as Walt’s family nemesis in the D.E.A as well as Giancarlo Esposito as the ice cold Gus, who has one of the best character arcs of the show. If you’re looking for something different, there is no other option, this is the show for you. The first half of the fifth and final season has just ended on the states and the second half doesn’t kick off until next summer so now is the perfect opportunity to catch up, with recent episodes airing on TG4 and as of Monday, the first four seasons are all available on DVD. As Pinkman might say, there’s no excuses yo!
