End Of An Era As O’Gara Hangs Up His Boots

Any regular readers of our rugby coverage here will know my feelings towards Ronan O’Gara over the last two years have been, to put it mildly, harsh. Whilst I would never dream of backtracking for the sake of bandwagon hopping, I will say that with the weekend’s news of his retirement, this is no longer the place for lambasting of him and it is only right that with his decision made we look back on his absolutely stellar career. O’Gara is the first high profile retirement of the so called Golden Generation, though I don’t say that to take away from the likes of Horgan, Flannery, Wallace and others. Where he differs from these stalwarts is that for the best part of ten years, he served with no alternative.

Ok, so there was no bolters in the end, no shock selections to any great degree bar one and as many disappointing omissions as you come to expect from a Lions squad selection. Warren Gatland has serious pressure on him with this tour as he is heralded as coach supreme due to his work with Wales and there is of course the fact that the Lions haven’t won a tour down under since 1989. With all of this in mind it’s understandable that he played it relatively safe when it came to selection, but on the other hand many of us hoped that the stubborn headed Gatland would have the bottle to pick outside the box too. Let’s have a look at the squad below so and muse over what might have been while we’re at it.

Fenlon Praises Trap’s World Cup Strategy

Pat Fenlon believes that blooding youngsters is the way ahead for international teams, and cites Ireland under Giovanni Trapattoni as an example for Scotland to follow.

As Scotland suffered the shame of being the first country to be eliminated from the World Cup, Ireland are still fighting it out with Sweden and Austria for a play-off spot.

Although he concedes that the Scots had the tougher group, Germany apart, Fenlon insists that introducing the youngsters into the squad at the right time is the reason why they are still challenging for a place in Rio next year. Read more

The website has existed since January 2011 during which time we have maintained a consistent level of hits aswel as engaging with our audience via the various social networking platforms.

We are now looking to recruit a large number of writers for various positions. Unfortunately such positions are unpaid however we do provide great experience for our writers.

Applicants must possess a high standard of writing and be capable of producing their own material. Writing experience is not essential but is beneficial. Applicants must also possess a high level of self motivation.

Irish News Review was set up by freelance journalist Glenn Dowd on January 4th 2011.

Dowd is a freelance journalist who was born in 1990. The Dubliner has been writing since the age of 16 and landed his first significant job in 2006 when he was taken on by the Lucan Gazette. After spending two years with the Gazette covering local sport and school events, Dowd sought pastures new.

Also coinciding with his spell with the Gazette, Dowd wrote for the official matchday programme of St Patricks Athletic for three years (2006-2009) .His column was entitled “Glenn`s Greatest” and relived the careers of famous players. Dowd also contributed special feature articles to the publication. In 2009 he adopted a new column, “Take It As Red”, where Pats fans would go head to head against the players in a quiz.

Dowd is also a successful freelance journalist, having had work published in numerous national titles including The Sunday World, The Irish Daily Mirror,The Irish Daily Star and The Irish Sun.

He was the Deputy Editor of the award winning BCFE Bulletin in 2010/2011, a student publication attached to Ballyfermot College of Further Education.

The newspaper won the award for best small publication of the year at the student media awards.

Dowd was also shortlisted for Journalist of the Year at the event.
