Airtricity League Preview: Hughes Sets Sights On Rovers

Irish News Review looks at this weekend’s games in the Airtricity Premier Division as old rivals do battle in the top flight for the first time since the famous reds from Drumcondra were relegated.

Shamrock Rovers V Shelbourne

The stand out game from this week’s round of fixtures takes place at Tallaght Stadium, between table toppers Shamrock Rovers and Shelbourne. Gary Twigg’s injury-time goal rescued a point for Rovers from last Friday’s game to Cork City. While, in the Setanta Sport’s Cup on Tuesday, they needed a penalty shootout to advance past Cliftonville, following a 2-0 second leg loss. Manager Stephen Kenny expects another tough game against in-form Shelbourne; ‘Both teams have had strong starts to the season, taking seven points from nine. This is our first Dublin derby and we’re back at home, so we know we’ll have to be at our best. There have been some very good individual performances in the last few games, but we know there is room for improvement from our game in Cork last week.’ The champions are still missing Ciaran Kilduff, Conor Winn and Conor McCormack through injury, while Conor Powell is suspended. Shels will be without the injured Paul Byrne, but welcome back Stephen Paisley and Kevin Dawson. Alan Matthew’s side have made a positive return to the top flight, aided by striker Philly Hughes’ three league goals, they sit joint top of the table going into tonight’s game. However, following last Friday’s 1-0 win over Derry City at Tolka Park, Matthews played down his side’s position as early season table toppers; ‘Where we are in the league is irrelevant really at this stage but it’s a nice position to find ourselves in.’ Verdict: Rovers Win.

Derry City V Cork City

Derry City clash with Cork City tonight at the Brandywell, with both sides entering the game in contrasting form. Derry have six points from their opening three games and, despite last week’s defeat to Shelbourne, they bounced back mid-week with a 3-1 win over fierce rivals Linfield in the Setanta Sports Cup. Candystripes boss Declan Devine is expecting a tough game tonight, but remains confident his side can continue their good form; ‘As with every game between Cork and Derry, I expect this to be a difficult game. Having said that, if we play with the fluidity that we displayed in the second half on Tuesday we should secure all three points.’ Derry striker Rory Patterson is suspended for the game, while Shane McEleney is an injury doubt. Cork City’s return to the top flight has been a struggle so far. Defeat in their opening two games turned to hope as the Rebels were seconds away earning their first win of the season against Shamrock Rovers last week, only for Gary Twigg to snatch a point for the champions. Manager Tommy Dunne is expecting another difficult game tonight; ‘Derry is always a tough place to go, I watched their game against Linfield the other night and you could see that they are a strong team; they are physically strong, they’re quick and they have good creativity in the side as well. They had a good season last season, and I think they will be even closer to the top this season.’ Stephen Mulcahy, Kevin Murray and Neal Horgan miss the trip through injury. Shane Duggan is still suspended. Verdict: Derry Win.

Bray Wanderers V Drogheda United

Bray Wanderers welcome Drogheda United to the Carlisle Grounds tonight. The Seagulls earned their first points of the new campaign last week, winning 3-2 in a thrilling game away to UCD. A brace from Danny O’Connor, adding to Jason Byrne’s opener, secured the win for Pat Devlin’s side. Devlin will be hoping his team can record back to back wins against Drogheda tonight; ‘I’m happy we got off the mark in Belfield last week’ he said. ‘I know it will be tough against Drogheda, as it always is, but it is a good challenge for us to build on last week.’  Drogheda have four points from three games and sit in sixth position entering the game. However, following last week’s draw with Dundalk, and Monday’s loss on penalties in the Leinster Senior Cup to Firhouse Clover, Mick Cooke will be hoping for a more positive performance from his side tonight. ‘Hopefully Monday was the kick that we needed.’ Cooke said. ‘I’m glad it came so early in the season. I will again be making more changes and giving the players who didn’t play on Monday a run out.’ Eric Foley and Paul Crowley are suspended while Declan O’Brien, who is carrying a knock from Monday’s game, is a doubt. Verdict: Draw.

Monaghan United V Sligo Rovers

Monaghan United host Sligo Rovers at Gortakeegan tonight. The home side are yet to win a game this season, but earned a credible 1-1 draw last week away to St. Patrick’s Athletic, a performance manager Roddy Collins hopes can be reproduced tonight. ‘I was proud of our lads performances, especially away from home, against such sides as Shamrock Rovers and Pat’s’ Collins said. ‘Sligo will be one of the sides to fear this year. All I ask from the lads is a repeat of the commitment and attitude we have seen in our opening three games.’ Injured trio Paul Whelan, Shaun Maher and John Reilly are still unavailable for selection. Meanwhile Sligo, unbeaten under new manager Ian Baraclough, have begun the new season brightly. Winning two of their three league games and advancing to the semi-finals of the SSC, Baraclough has been impressed with his new side; ‘We’ve shown good spirit in the early stages of the season. To get to the semi-finals of the Setanta Cup is great for the club as we want to stay involved in every competition. We’ve made a good start and we want to continue that.’ Mark Quigley and Alan Keane are both suspended for tonight’s game. Verdict: Sligo Win.

Dundalk V UCD

Dundalk and UCD meet tonight, with the home side still searching for their first win of the new campaign. Sean McCaffrey’s side had to settle for a draw last time out against Louth rivals Drogheda United. Despite their opponents finishing with nine players, Dundalk couldn’t make their numerical advantage count in a heated derby game. McCaffrey is hoping for a better footballing contest tonight; ‘UCD play the game in the right way so they will suit us in that respect, they will be a footballing side.’ The former Ireland underage manager also stressed he isn’t too concerned about their winless start to the new campaign; ‘People will look at the game and feel we need three points, but there is nothing won or lost at this stage of the season. When we get the performances right then we’ll start picking up points.’ Luke Danville, Mark Griffin and Eoghan Osborne all miss the game through injury for the home side. UCD make the trip to Oriel Park hoping to move on from last week’s disappointing 3-2 loss at home to Bray Wanderers. Manager Martin Russell is hoping for a positive response from his young side; ‘If we are to come out with anything from the game with Dundalk we will have to play much better than we did in the Bray game. To be fair to the lads they have looked bright and hungry in training and I am sure we will bounce back in a positive manner in Dundalk.’ The Students are without injured pair Ger Barron and Mick Leahy. Verdict: Draw.

Bohemians V St. Patrick’s Athletic

Dublin rivals Bohemians and St. Patrick’s Athletic clash at Dalymount Park on Sunday afternoon. The home side are rooted to the bottom of the table, the only team yet to earn a point. While in mid-week they crashed out of the Setanta Sports Cup to Crusaders, losing 2-0. Boh’s manager Aaron Callaghan was serving a touch line ban during the game and stand-in boss Owen Heary didn’t hold back when evaluating the game. ‘That was our worst performance of the season.’ Heary said. ‘Hopefully last night was a kick up the arse for our players, because we now need to put in a good performance against Pats.’ Meanwhile St. Pats have made a positive start to the new campaign. Sitting comfortably in joint first place with 7 points from three games, the Saints were denied maximum points last week by Monaghan, who held the Inchicore club to a 1-1 draw at Richmond Park. However, Liam Buckley’s side will be confident of taking all three points against a struggling Bohs side. Verdict: St. Pats Win.

Battle On The Boyne Set To Head Up This Week`s Fixtures

Irish News Review looks at the next round of fixtures in the Airtricity Premier Division as some teams are still looking to get off the mark for the season. There`s a tasty Louth derby in store while an early season six pointer is also on the card.

Drogheda United V Dundalk

The League’s two Louth clubs clash in a derby game at Hunky Dory’s park tonight. Dundalk are still looking for their first win of the new campaign and manager Seán McCaffrey will be hoping his side can produce a better display than last week, a 2-0 loss to St. Patrick’s Athletic. ‘I’m disappointed with the result, disappointed with the performance.’ McCaffrey said following the game. ‘We were well beaten by Pat’s. We never got into any sort of rhythm at all. We were poor from start to finish.’ After an overhaul of players during pre-season, McCaffrey stresses it will take time for his young squad to gel; ‘I think it is going to take a bit of time. I said at the start it will take 10 or 12 games before we hit any sort of form.’ Dundalk are likely to once again be without injured captain Chris Shields. Drogheda enter the derby on a high following last week’s 3-2 win at Cork City. 2-0 down at half time, they staged an unlikely comeback in the second half at Turner’s Cross. Manager Mick Cooke was naturally delighted with his side’s fight back; ‘I would have been happy to have got out of here with a point but to come away with three I’m very happy.’ If Drogheda can carry their momentum into the derby, Dundalk’s search for their first win could continue.

Verdict: Drogheda Win.

St. Patrick’s Athletic V Monaghan United

St. Patrick’s Athletic will be hoping to extend their positive start to the season when they host Monaghan United tonight. Monaghan, despite a spirited performance last week at Shamrock Rovers and an opening day draw with Dundalk, are still seeking their first win of the season. Injuries and suspensions mean Roddy Collins will be without up to five players for tonight’s game, including Willo McDonagh, Aidan Collins and Gareth O’ Connor. However, Collins remains upbeat; ‘It’s a good learning curve to be meeting strong teams like Rovers and St. Pats so early in the season and it gives us a good understanding of ourselves. Unfortunately we are hit with injuries again for this game. On the positive side I hope to have Robert Bayly and Bobby Ryan available.’ While Liam Buckley’s men, following last week’s 2-0 win against Dundalk, have six points from six and will be looking to carry their momentum into the game at Richmond Park. ‘Our lads are still trying to get to know each other, and the wins help everyone gel together quicker and become more confident as a team in training.’ Buckley said. ‘But Monaghan are a decent side. They’ll be tough opponents on Friday.’ St. Pat’s will be without Aidan Price and Christy Fagan, but will be confident of maintaining their winning start to the season.

Verdict: Pat’s Win.

Cork City V Shamrock Rovers

Cork City’s search for their first win of the season may have to wait another week as they host Shamrock Rovers tonight. If the challenge of beating the in-form Champions was not enough, Cork manager Tommy Dunne will have to lift his players following last week’s stunning 3-2 loss to Drogheda United, a game they were leading 2-0 at one stage.  Cork will be missing Colin Healy and Stephen Murray through injury, while Shane Duggan is suspended. Meanwhile, Shamrock Rovers are without Ciaran Kilduff, Conor Winn and Conor McCormack. Despite taking maximum points so far, manager Stephen Kenny is hoping for a better performance from his side tonight; ‘I think we’ve had a good start to the season, we’ve won all our games so far. I think we played extremely well in the first half against Drogheda and in the second half against Monaghan; it’s now time for us to put a good 90 minutes together.’ A capacity crowd is expected tonight at Turners Cross, but, barring an upset, Rover’s fans will be celebrating at full-time.

Verdict: Rovers Win.

Shelbourne v Derry City

Shelbourne host Derry City at Tolka Park as two of the league’s unbeaten sides square off. Shels come into the game on the back of two positive results; last week’s 2-0 win over Dublin rivals Bohemians and their opening night draw with Sligo Rovers. Shelbourne were outplayed for spells during last week’s game, but were clinical in front of goal. Strikes from Paddy Kavanagh and Phillip Hughes either side of half time proving the difference at Dalymount Park. Captain Glenn Cronin also turned in an impressive performance in central midfield against his old side. Derry City come into the fixture on a high themselves, following last week’s win against Bray Wanderers. Goals from Stewart Greacen and David McDaid added to a brace from striker Rory Patterson to give the Candystripes a comprehensive win over ten men Bray. Both teams have started the season well and fans at Tolka Park tonight could be treated to an entertaining high scoring game.

Verdict: Score Draw.

Sligo Rovers V Bohemians

Bohemians and Sligo Rovers clash tonight at the Showgrounds with the away side looking to give their fans something to cheer about. Bohs manager Aaron Callaghan has had a tough start to his tenure; having to completely overhaul the cash strapped club’s playing squad before the season began.  Despite playing attractive passing football, his side have lost both of their League games this season and go into tonight’s game with five players missing through injury. However, Callaghan remains positive his side can turn their fortunes around; ‘We deserved a point in at least one of the two league matches. It was individual mistakes that led to goals against us.’ Bohs have struggled in front of goal, failing to score in both League games, something Callaghan hopes to address tonight; ‘We also know we need to improve in the last third. We need to get our front players and our attacking midfielders into the box more and be more of a threat.’ Sligo come into the game following last week’s dramatic home win over UCD. Leading 1-0 from a first half Danny North goal, the Students equalised in the 90th minute before a Jason McGuinness header won the game for Sligo in the final minute of stoppage time. A comeback that delighted new boss Ian Baraclough; ‘They showed unbelievable character. They were disappointed to lose a goal, especially from a set piece. But to pick themselves up, drag themselves back up the pitch and create another chance was superb.’ Suspended pair Mark Quigley and Alan Keane are Sligo’s only absentees for tonight’s game.

Verdict: Sligo Win.

UCD V Bray Wanderers

UCD welcome Bray Wanderers to the Belfield Bowl this evening. The Students have enjoyed a fine start to the new season, defeating Cork City in their opening fixture. And, despite losing in the final minute last week away to Sligo Rovers, manager Martin Russell will no doubt take positives from the performance. However, UCD could be without as many as five players through injury for this evening’s fixture, Mark Langtry and Paul Corry among them. Meanwhile, for Bray, Pierce Sweeney is suspended and Sean Houston, Colm Tresson and Shane O’Connor are missing through injury. The Seagulls have yet to pick up any points this season, and come into tonight’s fixture following last week’s 4-0 loss at home to Derry City. It may only be the third game of the new season, but, according to manager Pat Devlin, tonight’s game will be; ‘An early season six-pointer.’ Devlin added; ‘It’s a game we need to get something out of and we certainly don’t want to lose.’

Verdict: Draw.

Airtricity Premier Division Preview

As the Airtricity League returns this weekend, Irish News Review looks at the opening set of fixtures and gives our verdict on where the first points of the league season will be heading.

Drogheda United V Shamrock Rovers

Shamrock Rovers begin their title defence away to Drogheda United. New Rovers manager Stephen Kenny inherits a side already brimming with quality and will be looking to begin his tenure with a comfortable win.  2012 promises to be another huge year for the Tallaght team, with the club aiming to add a third consecutive domestic title and their fans hoping for another European adventure.   In the off season Rovers signed experienced Bohemians midfielder Killian Brennan and former St. Patricks Athletic striker Daryl Kavanagh. Drogheda manager Mick Cooke has signed six players from his old club Monaghan United; including former fan favourite Declan O’Brien. Despite struggling on and off pitch in recent years, Drogheda manager Cooke is optimistic ahead of the upcoming campaign; ‘To say that I’m enthusiastic about 2012 would be a huge understatement. I’m delighted with the whole set-up this season. It’s an exciting squad.’  Cooke’s confidence could bode well for the new season, however, their opening game, like the league title itself, is Rovers’ to lose. Verdict: Rovers Win.

St. Patrick’s Athletic V Bray Wanderers

St Patrick’s Athletic battle Bray Wanderers this week as they look to get their season off to a winning start at Richmond Park. New manager Liam Buckley has acted swiftly in the transfer window bringing in some key players such as James Chambers and Jake Kelly. Buckley will be hoping that his side can challenge for the title this year and will be hoping his side can improve their performances after their recent exit from the Setanta Cup. As for Bray, Pat Devlin will again have to work with a relatively young squad this season. He will be hoping to keep the Seagulls in the top flight this season and his task will not have been helped by the departure of key players such as Chris Shields and Shane O`Neill. New signing Jason Byrne should start up front and Devlin will be relying on his goals to ensure his side avoid the drop. Verdict: Pats win.

Shelbourne V Sligo Rovers

Shelbourne mark their return to the Premier Division with a home tie, and a repeat of last season’s FAI Cup final, against Sligo Rovers.  The Dublin side may have been absent from this level for five years but their return should be helped by  some of manager Alan Matthews’ pre-season signings.  Players with top flight pedigree, including Glenn Cronin, Brian Shortall and Paddy Kavanagh, will add to a squad that finished second in the First Division last season and lost on penalties in the FAI Cup Final. Newly appointed Sligo manager Ian Baraclough will only have a few days to prepare for the fixture, but the former Scunthorpe United manager inherits a strong, successful side, which, once again, will be aiming to challenge Shamrock Rovers for the title. Danny North and Mark Quigley are amongst the Sligo pre-season signings. Verdict: Score Draw.

Monaghan United V Dundalk

Another newly promoted side, Monaghan United, start their campaign at home to Dundalk. If Roddy Collins’ team is to have any chance of retaining their top flight status, their home form will be vital.  Their chances of doing so were dealt a significant blow during pre-season, losing five key players to Drogheda United. However Collins did manage to keep Aidan Collins and Alan Byrne at the club and sign midfielder Robert Bayly. It’s also been a busy winter at Oriel Park; with twelve players exiting the club and thirteen players coming in. Former captain Liam Burns is among those signed by new manager Seán McCaffrey. The former Ireland underage boss will have another young squad at his disposal and, with bit of luck; a mid-table finish should be within reach.  As for Monaghan, with their financial limitations and inability to retain the nucleus of the squad which saw them promoted, avoiding relegation could be a struggle. However there is no doubt Collins, and his players, will relish the challenge. Verdict: Dundalk Win.

Derry City V Bohemians

Bohemians’ season opens away to Derry City at the Brandywell.  The cash strapped club endured a turbulent pre-season, from losing manager Pat Fenlon to almost going bust; new boss Aaron Callaghan has had to overall the entire squad. ‘It’s been a hectic four or five weeks’ Callaghan said, ‘We had to sign 26 or 27 players and we’re trying to gel them, bed them in and put a bit of shape on the team.’ With the club’s debt still looming in the background, a new manager and a new young squad; a mid-table finish could be the limit of the Gypsies’ ambitions this season.  However Bohs do go into the opening game following some recent positive developments. The club was last week rewarded a European spot, at the expense of Derry, who were denied a UEFA licence, while on the pitch they defeated Portadown in the first round of the Setanta Sports Cup.  Derry City may have lost their manager to Shamrock Rovers and their European place to Bohemians, but the Candystripes also have reasons to be positive entering the 2012 campaign. Despite losing Eamon Zayed and Gareth McGlynn, new manager, and former assistant, Declan Devine has kept the nucleus of last season’s squad, while adding, amongst others, Simon Madden and Rory Patterson. Another third place finish and a prolonged cup run should be possible for the Candystripes. Verdict: Derry Win.

UCD V Cork City

Cork City and UCD clash at the Belfield Bowl with both sides hoping to carry their momentum from last season into this game.  Cork return to the top flight as First Division champions while UCD won five of their final six home games in 2011. Cork manager Tommy Dunne has added former players Dan Murray and Colin Healy to his squad. Greg O’Halloran, last season’s captain, is no longer with the club and prolific striker Graham Cummins was recently sold to Preston North End.  Tadhg Purcell has signed on loan from Northampton Town. The former Shamrock Rovers striker has been plagued with injuries since moving to England in June 2010, but Dunne will be hoping he can regain the form that earned him the move and in the process fill the void vacated by Cummins. Martin Russell’s young UCD side play an expansive and admirable style.  Although they struggled on their travels last season, just nine points from eighteen games, the students’ home form proved more dependable, winning eight and drawing once.  The students’ home form will again be essential to retaining their position in the Premier Division. While mid-table should be well within Cork’s reach. Verdict: Cork win.
