You would be forgiven for thinking there are no League Of Ireland fixtures this weekend given Ireland’s crucial World Cup qualifier with the Faroe Islands. Nonetheless despite that game getting top billing there is a full card of League Of Ireland fixtures to complement what could prove to be an excellent footballing weekend. Read more
As faith would have it the League Of Ireland is yet again overawed by a second consecutive batch of Dublin derbies. St Patrick’s Athletic fully capitalised last week when they emerged as the only winner and in doing so moved joint top of the table. Few would bet against the Saints slipping up this time either but Shamrock Rovers will now doubt be eager to overcome managerless Shelbourne.
Elsewhere a mouth watering north v south battle takes place as Cork City make the long trek to the Brandywell to face Derry City in a must win game for both. Read more
The League Of Ireland focus switches to the capital this week as two potentially season defining derbies take place. Both derby games will have keen significance at both ends of the table as they pit title contenders against relegation threatened teams.

This week’s Airtricity League series features four league games complimented by a Setanta Cup Final between Shamrock Rovers and Drogheda United. Despite the season still being relatively young we can already get a fair idea of who will challenge at the top and who will be cast adrift at the bottom but such is the unpredictability of the league that results could surprise us at any instance. The pressure at the bottom is certainly heating up and some big games this season will determine whether the race for the drop will be exclusive to the three teams who already look destined for relegation. Another top night of action is bound to encapsulate League of Ireland fans as some of the country’s top teams get set to battle once more. All eyes will be on Richmond Park yet again as the Supersaints look to fend off the challenge of the high flying Candystripes in what could be a make or break fixture for both. Elsewhere things are hotting up at the bottom end of the table despite the league being in its infancy. Bohemians battle Bray in what already looks like a six pointer while winless UCD and Shelbourne have the unenviable task of trying to take three points from Shamrock Rovers and Limerick respectively. A similar story resumes this weekend as Sligo look to maintain their winning ways, UCD look to put an end to their winless run and Shamrock Rovers look to snap their sequence of draws. But the most interesting tie takes place in Louth where surprise package Dundalk battle Derry City. St Patrick’s Athletic are looking to bounce back from an early season defeat as they take on Bohemians at Richmond Park.
A disappointing 3-0 defeat at the hands of Shamrock Rovers was not the result that Liam Buckley and his side would have envisioned. They can take comfort from the fact that it is very early in the season and to take this opportunity to improve their overall game.
Bohemians will also be happier with their last result, also against Shamrock Rovers. It has been a mixed start for Bohs – one win, one draw and one defeat shows inconsistency, but like Pat’s its early days and a lot can change.
