Bale to Stay at Spurs For Now

File:Gareth Bale Brighton v Spurs Amex Opening 30711.jpg

Tottenham’s star man Gareth Bale is reportedly set to stay with the North London club for at least one more season, despite the lack of Champions League football. According to English newspaper, the London Evening Standard, which is close to the club, Bale is poised to commit his future to Spurs with a new £130,000 a week deal. However it is believed that should a bid in excess of £50 million come in for Bale at the end of next season, the Welshman will be allowed to leave. An announcement is expected to be made by the club shortly, which should give the fans something to cheer about since Arsenal pipped them to the Champions League by a point on the last day of the season on Sunday.

Senator Calls for Tax on Smartphones

File:SeanadEireann-800.jpg

Fine Gael senator Catherine Noone has called on the Irish government to implement a new tax on smartphones, one which would apparently function as an additional levy alongside VAT.

“The issue of suicide and suicide prevention is again under the spotlight in recent days, thanks in no small part to the inspirational message of Kerry teenager Donal Walsh,” she said as reported in thejournal.ie. “While government funding for suicide prevention has actually increased this year, I think we need to be looking at new ways in which to fund suicide prevention measures. Placing a small levy on the sale of smartphones could be a very simple way to generate extra revenues for this crucial area.”

A man who fraudulently claimed over €43,000 in social welfare payments in his brothers name over a four year period has managed to avoid jail.

Martin Foley, a chronic alcoholic who apparently regularly drinks over 50 bottles of beer and three bottles of vodka in a day, used his brother’s social welfare card to claim €188 each week. His brother, who is living in the UK was unaware of the fraud. Foley was also claiming disability allowance during this time.

Private Organisations Provide Fodder Relief

File:Silageballen-patpatpat1.jpg

In a response to the recent fodder crisis which has left many farmers across the country fearful for both their animals’ welfare and their finances, a €250,000 fodder fund has been set up by three Irish firms – SuperValu, Kepak and Oliver Carty Ltd, while SuperValu has also offered to take care of the transport of fodder – arriving in Dublin Port – to co-ops around Ireland.

The harsh winter we have experienced over the course of the past few months, and the fact that grass has begun to grow roughly a month later than usual, has meant that farmers have had to purchase extra fodder, leading to a shortage, and driving up the prices of any available supplies, placing extreme pressure – financial and emotional – on farmers who have been doing their utmost to keep their livestock alive and fed.

Independent Evaluation Reveals JobBridge Flaws

File:Joan Burton crop.jpg

An independent evaluation carried out on Ireland’s national internship scheme, JobBridge, has found that three in five people who undertake internships through the scheme have found employment afterwards. The evaluation, which was carried out by Indecon Economic Consultants shows that 61 per cent of interns moved on to paid employment following completion of their internship.

The Government has consistently placed their full support and backing behind the scheme. Speaking on the findings of the report, Taoiseach Enda Kenny said: “The Government has an ambitious plan to modernise and improve our work activation services as part of our Pathways to Work strategy. JobBridge was a key early scheme to help deliver on this agenda. It is now clear that JobBridge is delivering for thousands of jobseekers by providing them with valuable opportunities to gain relevant work experience, knowledge and skills in a workplace environment. The fact that three in five interns gain employment following the scheme is a testament to the potential that exists in providing new work activation services to jobseekers and employers.”

German Football Announces Itself With A Bang

File:Heineken UEFA champions league tapestry.jpg

What have they been putting in the water in Germany this week, and where can we get our hands on some of that clearly magical substance?

It’s been another funny old week in European football. During Bayern Munich’s 4-0 humbling of Barcelona on Tuesday night, one of the commentators on TV3 said something to the effect that of all those who would be delighted with the Catalan’s rude awakening, chief amongst them would surely be Real Madrid. Fast forward 24 hours and Los Blancos and their supporters are undoubtedly a little quieter, having been on the receiving end of a 4-1 hiding of their own. It’s hard to believe that the two defeated Spanish sides are home to the top two players in the world.

Bale Fighting To Face Manchester City

Tottenham manager Andre Villas-Boas will certainly be considering playing Welsh winger Gareth Bale in Sunday’s big face off against Manchester City.

Bale has been out of the team since he was injured 15 days ago playing against Basle in the Europa League. Though initially feared he could have to sit out the rest of the season sitting on the sideline, the 23-year old has been back training with the first team for the past few days and could be fit again for the game on Sunday. “I am pretty confident [that Bale will be fit],” said AVB. “He’s made good progress from the beginning of the week to be training with the team so I think he will [be] definitely up for selection.”

Austerity Was A Mistake Says Former IMF Mission Chief

File:Protest against bailout of Anglo Irish Bank.jpg

A reliance on austerity as a measure of combating the economic downturn is actually counter-productive, said Professor Ashoka Mody, a former International Monetary Fund (IMF) mission chief for Germany and Ireland.

Speaking on RTE’s Morning Ireland, Professor Mody said that the Troika had other options besides the imposition of austerity, and added that the bondholders could have been forced to bear some of the burden. “We are seeing a belated recognition of the fact that the constraint imposed only by austerity was untenable,” he said on the programme. “Clearly the experience, if experience was needed, has demonstrated that reliance on austerity is counterproductive.” The option of burning the bondholders wasn’t considered at the time, because the government was concerned about causing further financial instability.
